Our Work

horizontal rule image At Unbuckled, we are dedicated to to fighting caregiver discrimination, especially for those caring for children with long-term illnesses or disabilities. Balancing a child’s healthcare needs with understanding legal rights can be overwhelming for, leading to financial and legal challenges that increase family stress, which can negatively impact children's health outcomes. With over 200,000 children admitted to pediatric hospitals for extended stays since 2021, the need for our services is clearer than ever.

Legal Support

At Unbuckled, our core mission is to address caregiver discrimination, particularly for those looking after children with long-term illnesses or disabilities. The legal challenges caregivers face can be overwhelming, from understanding employment rights to navigating disputes with employers. Many caregivers and even employers are not fully aware of their legal rights and responsibilities, which can lead to conflicts, financial strain, and unnecessary stress.

Unbuckled provides crucial legal support to bridge this knowledge gap. We offer guidance on existing laws, help in negotiating with employers, and support through legal proceedings if needed. Our aim is to ensure that caregivers can focus on what’s most important—caring for their child—without the added burden of legal complexities.

Financial Assistance

At Unbuckled, we understand that the financial challenges facing caregivers of children with long-term illnesses can be as daunting as the medical battles these families face. Navigating the high costs of ongoing medical care, alongside potential loss of income due to reduced work hours or unpaid leave, places a significant financial burden on families. This strain is not only about the immediate costs but also about the long-term financial stability of the family.

Moreover, the link between financial stress and health outcomes cannot be overstressed. Financial burdens can lead to skipped medical appointments, delayed treatments, and the inability to afford necessary medications, all of which can lead to poorer health outcomes for children. By reducing these financial stresses, Unbuckled not only helps improve the quality of life but potentially also decreases the likelihood of hospital readmissions and complications.

Advocacy

Unbuckled champions systemic change through advocacy aiming to improve policies that support caregivers of children with long-term illnesses. We collaborate with organizations, healthcare providers, and policymakers to amplify caregivers' voices, advocating for better legal protections, financial support, and flexible workplace policies. Our efforts not only support individual families but also drive broader societal change, ensuring caregivers receive the recognition and support they deserve. By uniting caregivers and leveraging our collective voice, Unbuckled is focused on making a significant impact on policy and public awareness.
